The licence, the Special Manager and your stay

Headlines about the operator can make a guest nervous. Here is the decision itself, with dates, and our reading of what it changes for someone booking a room.

Published 29 October 2026 · facts checked 29 October 2026

What has happened, in order

  1. 9 December 2022 The Star Entertainment Group announced disciplinary action in Queensland, including a deferred licence suspension for The Star Gold Coast and the appointment of a Special Manager.
  2. Until September 2026 The suspension stayed deferred while the operator worked through a remediation plan; it was due to start on 30 September 2026.
  3. 24 September 2026 The Queensland Government announced that the suspension — a 90-day suspension due to start on 30 September 2026 — is deferred to 31 March 2027, after advice from the Special Manager, Nicholas Weeks. His appointment is extended to the same date.
  4. 31 March 2027 The next date to watch. We will update this note when there is a decision.

What a Special Manager does

In the Government's words, the deferral lets the operator keep working on the outstanding commitments in its remediation plan, and lets the Special Manager keep independently observing how those measures are implemented and whether the reforms work, to inform future decisions about the casino's operations.

What it means for a guest

The casino licence covers the casino. The hotels, restaurants, pools, spa and theatre are run by the same group, but a hotel stay is not a casino transaction. As of 29 October 2026 the resort's pages show all four hotels, its restaurants and its event programme operating normally, with shows listed into 2027. If a suspension ever took effect, the decision would concern the gaming floor; we would expect the resort to announce any effect on other venues, and we would add it here.

Our desk does not take payments. If you book through us, the booking is made with the hotel or an established booking partner under their cancellation terms, which we show you before you confirm.

Why we include this at all

Because it is true, current and easy to find, and a guide that hides it is not much of a guide. We have kept to the Government's statement and the operator's own announcement and left out commentary.

Three short steps: dates, the room you have in mind, where to reply. Our desk takes it from there.

How it works: the request goes to this site's booking desk, not to the hotel. We check availability and the current rate with the hotel's reservations team or a booking partner and answer by email. We never ask for card details here, and a request is not a booking.

If your request turns into a confirmed stay, the hotel or the booking partner that completes it pays us a commission. You pay nothing extra for asking. How we earn.

Received. Our desk now checks the dates with the hotel's reservations team or a booking partner and replies by email, usually within one business day. Nothing is booked or charged until you say yes to an offer.
