The Star Gold Coast, reviewed
A resort that does convenience very well and calm only in places. Here is how we weigh it for a short coastal break, and where we think people go wrong when they book.

Before the verdict: what we did and did not do
This is a desk review. We read every official page the resort publishes for its hotels, restaurants, pools, car park and theatre, the Queensland Government's latest statement on the casino licence, and the airport's transport page, all on 29 October 2026. We did not stay as guests of the hotel and we do not invent guest stories. Where public ratings could be read with a count and a date we would quote them; on the day we checked, only Google Maps showed a score with a review count — 4.2 out of 5 from 14,840 reviews, for the resort as a whole — and our ratings page explains what that figure does and does not cover.
What works
- Everything is close Pools, spa, nine places to eat, four bars, a 2,150-capacity theatre and the casino are inside one complex. On a two-night trip that saves real time: dinner after a show is a lift ride, not a taxi.
- The beach is walkable The resort puts the sand about 300 metres away. Broadbeach is a beach suburb, not a city block, and you can be on the sand before breakfast.
- A real choice of room A 25 m² Dorsett room, a Star Grand corner room with a balcony, a 151 m² three-bedroom Sky Villa, a Darling penthouse with its own billiard room: the range is unusually wide for one address.
- Transport without a car Trams run every 7.5 minutes on weekdays and every 10 at weekends between 7am and 7pm, from Broadbeach North. Since August 2026 the line also runs south to Burleigh Heads, where the airport bus connects.
- Food with a range From Food Quarter, open until 5:30am, to Kiyomi, which won Best Japanese in South East Queensland at the 2026 Restaurant and Catering Awards, by the resort's own awards list.
What does not
- Parking Limited, not guaranteed with a room, often full on Friday and Saturday evenings, and closed to anything taller than 1.95 m. Guests of The Star Grand and The Star Residences get a flat nightly rate; Dorsett has no car park of its own. Details on our parking page.
- The casino is the hub Food Quarter, Cherry Bar and Garden Kitchen & Bar sit on the casino level. If you are travelling with teenagers or simply do not like the noise of a gaming floor, plan which entrances you use. Adults-only rules are strict: 18+ for the casino and for several bars.
- Four hotels, four rule books The Darling pool shuts at 6pm and is for Darling guests only; The Star Grand pool runs 6am to 9pm; Dorsett offers no rollaway beds at all. Easy to get wrong when booking.
- A licence under supervision Since December 2022 the casino licence has been subject to a deferred suspension and a Special Manager; the latest deferral runs to 31 March 2027. It does not change how a hotel stay works, but you should know.
Which hotel we would pick
| Trip | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Couple, first visit | The Star Grand — Corner Balcony Deluxe | Every one has its own balcony; pool open 6am–9pm. |
| Anniversary or splurge | The Darling — Stellar Suite | Suites from 70 m², private pool for Darling guests, gym 24/7. |
| Family of four | The Star Residences — 2-bedroom ocean view | Kitchen, laundry, two bathrooms; cots and highchairs on request. |
| Short work trip | Dorsett — Executive room | Level 19 lounge with breakfast and evening drinks; average 28 m². |
| Concert night only | The Star Grand — Superior Deluxe | Indoor walk to the theatre; express check-out on request. |
The verdict in one paragraph
Book The Star Gold Coast if you want a beach weekend where dinner, a show and the pool need no planning, and you are comfortable with a casino at the heart of the building. Pick the hotel inside the resort carefully — the four are genuinely different — and do not count on parking on a Saturday. If you want quiet above all, The Darling is the calmest part of the complex on paper: a small, all-suite building with its own pool and its own entrance to Nineteen.

What would change our view
- A clear public figure for parking spaces, or a guarantee of a space with a room booking.
- Published room sizes for The Star Grand (the hotel page lists categories but not square metres).
- A final Queensland decision on the casino licence after 31 March 2027.
- Tripadvisor and Booking.com scores we can read with a count and a date — we will add them when we can.
