Journal · choosing a room
The Star Grand or Dorsett for two nights?
Both sit inside the same resort, both share the casino, the restaurants and the Isoletto pool. The differences are in the room, the car and the morning.
Most couples who look at The Star Gold Coast end up choosing between these two, because The Darling is a splurge and the Residences make most sense for families. So here is the comparison we would want, built from the two hotels' own pages.
The room itself
Dorsett publishes its sizes: an average of 25 square metres for its Standard rooms and 28 for Executive. The Star Grand does not publish sizes at all, so we cannot claim its rooms are bigger, only that its suites are clearly a different class. What both do publish is the balcony question. At Dorsett, every Deluxe and Executive room has a private balcony and no Standard room does. At The Star Grand, the Corner Balcony Deluxe Room has one by definition, the suites have balconies or terraces, and the other two room types are not described with one.
Breakfast and the lounge
Dorsett's Executive rooms come with 24-hour access to the Level 19 Executive Lounge: daily buffet breakfast, refreshments through the day, and sunset drinks and canapés. For a couple who would otherwise pay for two breakfasts and two pre-dinner drinks each day, that is the real value of the upgrade. The Star Grand has no lounge on its page; breakfast comes from room service, Harvest Buffet or Nineteen, or with a package such as Stay & Dine.
The car
This is where Dorsett loses. It has no car park; you use the resort's at a discounted Dorsett rate, on levels 3, 3M and 4, with the same Friday and Saturday crush as everyone else. The Star Grand's guests at least get a flat nightly rate and the option of valet. Neither guarantees a space.
Beds and a third person
If a third person might join — a child, a friend — The Star Grand can add a rollaway for a nightly fee, one per room. Dorsett cannot add a rollaway or a sofa bed at all.

Our call
If you arrive by plane or tram and want a balcony and a lounge breakfast, a Dorsett Executive room is a smart buy. If you are driving, travelling with a child, or want a suite, The Star Grand. If you are unsure, send a request with the wishes box filled in — we will ask for both and show you the two offers side by side.
